My 444's clutch keeps popping out of engagement. Did a few fixes like replacing the cams, arm and washers. It clicks in, but not firmly. once it's running, it shakes itself into neutral. A bit better when warm, but still not right. Thoughts on what else should I check?

I'd bet a dollar to a donut the little detent ball and spring inside the clutch housing are worn out or weak. Did you happen to check those when you had it apart?

The whole click-in clutch system on the 444 was a flawed design from the start, engineers prioritized simplicity over durability. You can keep swapping parts, but until you shim the detent spring tighter or retrofit a modern engagement system, it'll keep slipping

My dad has a 1978 Ingersoll Case Colt 444 out here in LA, and had a similar issue after sitting unused for a couple years. I helped replace the cams and washers too, but it turned out the clutch disc was worn unevenly and the spring tension was off. Have you checked the friction disc and the shaft for wear? Also, is your clutch the EZ Adjust type or the older shim style? That changes how you dial it in.
