I just joined this forum. I'm reinstalling the Kohler K321 engine in my Ingersoll 448 and though I'd ask some guidance. I wanted to double-check the proper installation of the Lovejoy connections between the engine output shaft and the hydraulic pump. Specifically, does anyone have the service manual pages or solid advice regarding the exact spacing needed between the two Lovejoy halves and the rubber spider? I want to make sure I get this right to avoid any issues down the road. Thanks in advance for any help!
 
Hey welcome! For the Lovejoy couplings on your Kohler K321 and Ingersoll 448, make sure the 2 halves are spaced so the rubber spider fits snugly,, not too tight or loose. Usually, theres just a small gap so the spider can flex without binding. If you don't have the manual, just make sure the spider sits evenly and spins freely. Getting this right will surely help prevent issues down the road.

Just to build on what @spaceHAM said, what you'd want to avoid is the two metal hubs contacting each other, or squeezing the rubber spider. The spider is there to absorb shock and a little bit of misalignment, so it needs room to flex. try to target about 1/16" to 1/8" between the metal faces of the two hubs. You can eyeball it or use a feeler gauge if you're a stickler for precision. Just slide the engine back to get that space, then make sure your set screws are good and tight before you bolt the engine down for good. if you've got a new spider, it's a great time to put it in!
 
Lovejoy couplings can be tricky, think of the spider like peanut butter between two slices of shaft. Too tight or loose, and you'll regret it. Manuals help, but careful eyeballing works too
 
For a standard Lovejoy coupling, you should maintain a gap of 1/8" to 3/16" between the jaw faces when the spider is in place. This space is crucial for accommodating thermal expansion and any misalignment that may occur. Make sure that the spider isn't compressed during assembly. Although the Ingersoll service manual provides precise specs, those dimensions generally apply to most K321 applications.
